Judy Sklar Rasminsky is a professional journalist
and author who has tackled subjects as diverse as rusting cars and
public opinion polls, but her major interests are children, parenting,
child care and education, and health and science.
For many years she worked as a staff editor
and researcher for book and magazine publishers such as Harper &
Row, the Reader’s Digest, and the Hearst Corporation. As a freelancer,
she has authored trade books, textbooks, and booklets, and her articles
have appeared in the Reader’s Digest, Working Woman, the
Los Angeles Times, and numerous Canadian publications. Challenging
Behavior in Young Children is her latest book.
Judy specializes in making difficult information
lively and interesting to read. She is comfortable collaborating
with experts and has worked with government departments and a variety
of non-profit organizations, including schools, sports clubs, child
care federations, and community development groups. She is a member
of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Periodical
Writers Association of Canada, the Text and Academic Authors Association,
and the National Writers Union.
Children and parenting demystified
Judy makes the confusing world of children and
parenting less mysterious through solid research and clear, lively
prose. In a field swamped with jargon and concepts that are often
unproven or anecdotal, Judy’s work as a researcher, analyst, and
writer stands out. In her hands, soft or complex subject matter
becomes clear and comprehensible, easy to read, and easy to use.
Judy’s books, booklets, and articles help people
who care about children to understand the issues of childhood and
adolescence, strengthen their relationships with children, and make
more informed choices for their development, care, and education.
Health and science handled with sensitivity
and skill
Judy has a strong interest in science and health
issues and has written about anorexia, stroke, HIV, DES, Alzheimer’s
disease, hospices, and the PET scanner, among other topics. Her
byline has appeared in many North American publications as well
as college and high school textbooks. “When a Baby Dies,” her Reader’s
Digest feature about miscarriage and stillbirth, drew over 1,500
letters.
